To Keep

Something to hold on to, to keep in mind, to guard and to preserve…

We all have bits and pieces, vague traces and fragments of past moments or events kept in our memory. We all reflect upon our past from time to time, trying to create a mental picture to relive in a moment long gone.

Time is irreversible, we cannot take back time, we cannot experience a moment more than once. Even the most cherished or loathed memories of events decay and become lost to us over time. There seems to be no cure for this forgetting phenomenon but one: keeping things.

As our memories erode, the souvenirs from our past start taking on a new mission; scraps of paper with notes scribbled, ephemera, trinkets, kept objects give us the opportunity to touch, see, feel and even smell the past without having to go back there. The things we keep don’t have to mean much extrinsically, but a great amount of feeling and memory is contained inside. Feelings and memories are the secrets between us and the objects that are kept.

Personally, I like this method of travelling in time; I go through my kept things every once in a while when I am alone, inhale their scent, remember what those memories meant to me. To me this is a very unique and personal experience. That is why I chose this concept as my final project. I want to find out about others like me who keep things, others who bond with their past through things. I plan to create, design and curate, “thingswekeep”, a photo exhibition that questions the nature of keeping things, through objects that they (you?) have kept.

You don’t have to have a million things to show, you may have kept just one thing from your past. Maybe there are things that you don’t know why you kept, but keep them anyway, for no apparent reason. It doesn’t really matter what you keep, it matters why you keep it. My interest doesn’t actually lay in what you collect materially, but does more so in what you keep between each other.

Call For Entries

If you are interested in taking part in the project, please take a picture of your thing(s) and send an e-mail to caglacamcioglu@gmail.com.

I prefer shots in natural daylight (if you don’t have access to photo lights), taken with a high resolution digital camera.  As I plan to accompany images with text in the exhibition, please try and take your time to answer the questions below briefly.

Thank you for your collaboration.

See you at the exhibition,
Çağla Camcıoğlu
